Thin Ice [Flash Fiction]

On my Goodreads author page, someone (or some robot) posted a challenge: Write a two sentence horror story. It was posted a long time ago, but I answered it anyway, in 2022. Remember, it’s a HORROR story:

Thin Ice

Flash Fiction by Richard J. Schneider

The trio made big and little footprints in the one inch snow covering the iced over lake as Mom, Dad, and the little boy walked out along the line of ice fishing huts twenty five yards off shore. Not realizing thin weak ice covered the old fishing holes enough to support only the new snow, the family walked on enjoying the sunny mid winter day, but when they turned to take a photo of their son behind them all they saw was a dark round hole in the snow a dozen paces back, and no boy.

I have been “doodle” writing since the pandemic started. Actually, since a bit before. The Trump years became a sort of research phase for some future mystery novel. Book 3 in the Vic Bengston Investigation series of mystery novels is on the way. This one is called FRACK, and deals with, you guessed it Fracking. It’s a cold case story set in Colorado. And you won’t believe to what lengths our government went to bust up the earth for oil and gas. Investigative reporter Vic Bengston unravels the mystery, as usual.
